Minutes of the Meeting with the Dean/Freshers orientation held at Alakija hall on the 18th of October 2022.
The meeting commenced at exactly 12:29 pm and Mrs. Jolayemi said the opening prayer. The welcome address was taken by Mrs. Jolayemi after which Dr. Aguda was invited to give a word. Dr. Aguda began by welcoming the freshers and congratulating them on their admission to the faculty of law.
Dr. Aguda addressed the issue of dress code he mentioned that the male students must be corporately dressed in white shirts and black trousers together with black ties while the female student must also be decently dressed. Dr. Aguda further admonished the students to always carry along the level adviser in selecting courses.
Dr. Okesola was invited to speak on community service. He began by reminding students of the fact that Ajayi Crowther university is a faith-based institution aimed at forming students morally and spiritually. He mentioned that it is compulsory to be a part of the community worship on Wednesday by 3 pm and on Sunday.
Mr. Oladeji, from the faculty of law library, was also called up on. He began by recognizing the presence of the distinguished personnel after which he welcomed the new students. He gave a brief address, stating that it is important for students to come for registration to get familiar with how the library runs, and also encouraged the students to always visit the library.
Right after, HOD Prof. A.F Agbonjimi was also invited to the podium. He addressed the issue of ‘TIME MANAGEMENT’ He mentioned that it is important to regulate one’s time stating that time is a valuable resource. He also mentioned that there are two objectives of being a law student: formative objectives and submassive objectives. He added that it is very essential to set daily objectives further stating that a major objective in a day as a law student is going to the library -reading journals, books, and most importantly, at least a newspaper. He addressed the LSS executives that as leaders, it is important to have perseverance. As a leader, he or she must put others first before him or herself.
The Dean of the faculty of law, Prof. Olarewaju Onadeko SAN was also invited to the podium. He began by highlighting a few reasons why students want to study law. He also added that the school has one of the best-modernized law faculty in the country. He stressed the fact that hard work is very important. He mentioned that the issue of carryovers in the faculty has to be eliminated to a point and the consequence of getting a carryover is a phone call to the parents of such a person.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Popoola of the institution came up to stand in for the vice chancellor, Prof. Timothy Adebayo. He congratulated the freshers on their admission to Ajayi Crowther university specifically the faculty of law, which he described as one of the best in the country.
The Dean continued by stressing the fact that students need to approach the lecturers and level advisers on challenges they might encounter. He ended with a few notes of advice. Firstly, every law student must abide by the laid down school rules and regulations he advised the students to ensure not to step out of line during their stay in their institution.
Furthermore, The Dean of students affairs, at Ajayi Crowther University, Dr.Isibor was also invited to the podium. He started by recounting what the Dean of the faculty of law said about keeping the school rules and regulations.
He also went ahead to examine the functions of the students’ affairs about students. Firstly, he stressed the issue of the dress code. He added that the new rules of the school on dressing indecently attract a fine of #5000 with no compromise.
Also, the Dean of student affairs spoke on the issue of residency. He admonished the students specifically the freshers not to allow oppression or intimidation from the stallites. He also stressed the issue of making friends. He admonished the freshers to make the right choices in their choice of friends. He further mentioned that under no circumstances should a student be involved in cultism which earns students caught immediate expulsion. He admonished the student to develop their spiritual life. He added that it is important for every student to attend every chapel service. Lastly, he spoke on drug intake. He mentioned that taking hard drugs can cause harm to the body. In conclusion, Dr. Isibor made it known that there are channels for making one’s grievances known. He advised the students not to take laws into their hands.
The Staff Adviser, Mrs. Jolayemi stated that the freshers need to collect the assessment form from the faculty officer as soon as possible. She made mention of the mandatory 75% class attendance needed to be eligible to write exams. She also discussed the required dress code: black gowns or white shirts and black skirts for women, and white shirts black trousers, and black ties for males.
The LSS president, Sanu Oluwakamikun was also invited. He began by welcoming the freshers to Ajayi Crowther university. He went ahead to state that the LSS is the student body arm of the faculty. He also mentioned that there are various activities put in place at various internals by the LSS such as debates, quizzes, etc. Also, he spoke about the available chambers in the faculty which are:- Victus chambers, human right chamber, Equity chamber, and liberty chamber. Also, he announced the introduction of the new law career clubs namely; The Tech Law Club, The Energy Law Club, and The ADR Law Club. He stated that in order to supplement what is being taught in class, law students will have access to tutorials.
The most significant announcement was the increase in LSS dues from #7000 to #8000.
